Introduction

ESRI is pleased to announce the ArcSDE 8.3 SQL Server Performance Patch. This Patch contains performance improvements when connecting to a large SQL Server System Table. We highly recommend that customers download and install this Patch at their earliest convenience.

Issues Fixed with this Patch

CQ00209987: When using ArcGIS 8.3 to connect to a large SQL Server System Table (sysprotects), sites with many users may experience a long connection time.

Windows (Server)

• Under the %SDEHOME%\bin folder:
sdesqlsrvr83.dll

Windows (Client C-API SDK)

• Under the %SDEHOME%\bin folder:
sdesqlsrvr83.dll

Installing the Patch

Since this Patch replaces a file from ArcSDE 8.3 Service Pack 1, ArcSDE 8.3 Service Pack 1 must be installed before you can install this Patch. It is strongly recommended that you back up your database including all previous ArcSDE system tables and user layer data before upgrading your ArcSDE installation. Install this patch using your sa user account.

Server Install for Windows -

1. Make sure you have write access to the ArcSDE installation folder, that no one is using ArcSDE, and that the ArcSDE service is down.



2. Download the setup file to a location other than the ArcSDE installation folder:




sde83-sql-perfpatch.exe

3. Double-click the setup file to start the install process.



4. When Setup starts, follow the instructions on your screen.



5. To upgrade, run sdesetupmssql. Failure to do so may cause problems in starting the service or with connecting to the service.

   % sdesetupmssql -o upgrade -u sa -p <password>

6. As the SDE user, run the following command to restart the ArcSDE service:

   C:\> sdemon -o start

Client Install for Windows -

1. Make sure you have write access to the ArcSDE client installation folder:.



2. Download the setup file to a location other than the ArcSDE client installation folder:




C-API SDK client sde83-sql-perfpatch-capi-client.exe

3. Double-click the setup file to start the install process.



4. When Setup starts, follow the instructions on your screen.

ESRI Products connecting to ArcSDE (Application and Direct Connect connections).

1. If you connect to ArcSDE 8.3 using ArcGIS 8.3, ArcIMS 4.0.1, or ArcView GIS 3.3 with DBA 2.1e, please follow the steps below to install this Service Pack to your ArcGIS 8.3, ArcIMS 4.0.1, or ArcView GIS 3.3 with DBA 2.1e installation folder:
   
   
   • Before you start, make sure you have write access to the installation folder, then download the zip file to that location:
     
     

     sde83-sql-perfpatch-esri.zip

   • ArcIMS only, stop the ArcIMS Tasker, ArcIMS Monitor, ArcIMS Application Server (in that order).

   • Use WinZip to extract the new files from sde83-sp1-esri.zip to the apprpriate installation folder, see list below:
     
     
     • ArcGIS Desktop, Workstation, or ArcView 8 -<installation-folder>\arcexe83\(bin & lib)
       
     • ArcView GIS - <installation-folder>\av_gis30\arcview\(bin32 & DCONNECT\LIB)
       
     • ArcIMS - <installation-folder>\server\(bin & lib)
       
       

   • ArcIMS only, restart ArcIMS Application Server, ArcIMS Monitor and ArcIMS Tasker (in that order).
     

Identifying QFE files on your machine

To check for the presence of Quick Fixes, examine the unique identification information by a (right click, properties, version tab) action under Explorer. With only a few exceptions, all files modified as part of a QFE distribution can be uniquely identified in this manner. Under Windows 2000, select 'Product Version' under the 'Item name' column to see the unique identifier.
