Introduction

ESRI® is pleased to announce ArcGIS Desktop 8.3 Survey Analyst Service Pack 1. This Service Pack contains several maintenance fixes, improvements in performance, and enhancements for developers using the Survey Analyst extension. The fixes deal specifically with the issues listed below under Issues Addressed with this Service Pack.

We recommend that all ArcGIS 8.3 customers, who use or develop applications using the Survey Analyst extension, download and install this Service Pack at their earliest convenience to ensure the highest quality experience when working with ArcGIS 8.3. You can install this Service Pack on any ArcGIS 8.3 installation.

NOTE: If you are using a localized version of ArcGIS, please contact your local distributor to get the updated language supplement.

Issues Addressed with this Service Pack

CQ00179890 - Change units to points in label offset dialogue and change label text placement from map units to points.
CQ00184489 - ArcCatalog crashes when "Survey Measurement Formats" tab is selected while running with ResSurveyEditorUI.dll (resource-only DLL for localized version).
CQ00184509 - Localization issues with Survey Dataset Properties dialog.
CQ00184518 - Localization issue with "Survey Project Folder Properties" dialog.

CQ00188423 - GetLinksByFeature returns S_FALSE when the feature does not contain any links (note: the user must check for null pointer rather than an empty enumerator).
CQ00188696 - Fixed logic of increasing and decreasing the RefCount when Advice/Unadvice is called.
CQ00189752 - Deleting a project in a read-only personal gdb fatals ArcCatalog on exit.
CQ00189860 - Read only personal gdb should not allow changes.
CQ00194162 - Japanese characters are not displayed correctly in "Survey Measurement Formats" tab.
CQ00194327 - "Link" dialog does not get displayed if ResEditorEx.dll is installed.

Installing the Service Pack

Since this Service Pack replaces several ArcGIS Desktop 8.3 files, ArcGIS Desktop 8.3 must be installed before you can install this Service Pack.

1. Make sure you have write access to your ArcGIS Desktop, and that no one is using ArcGIS Desktop.



2. Download ArcGIS-83-SA-Sp1.exe (8 MB) to a location other than your ArcGIS Desktop installation location.
   
   
3. Double-click the setup file to start the install process.



4. When Setup starts, follow the instructions on your screen.

NOTE: If you have installed client setups from a shared Network Administrative ArcGIS Desktop setup, this Service Pack must be applied to all client installations.

NOTE - For Survey Analyst Developers: Three of the original five object libraries have been consolidated into a single object library. To clearly differentiate the new set of object libraries from the previous set, the names of the two unchanged object libraries have also been changed. If you have developed applications that reference these original object libraries, they will need to be re-referenced and the relevant binaries will need to be recompiled. With this service pack, the Survey Analyst extension uses three object libraries instead of five.

The names of the original references are:

NOTE - For users of third party Survey Analyst based applications: If you experience difficulties with a custom application that was developed prior to this service pack and that uses Survey Analyst, then you should request a new version of this custom application that is compatible with this Service Pack.

How to identify which Service Pack is installed

To check for the presence of this Service Pack, examine the unique identification information by a (right click, properties, version tab) action under Explorer. With only a few exceptions, all files modified as part of a QFE distribution can be uniquely identified in this manner. Under Windows 2000, select 'Product Version' under the 'Item name' column to see the unique identifier.
