			<attraccr>There are differences between reported values for each element at adjacent boundaries.  This discrepancy has been dealt with by selecting a small number of broad intervals.  There is variability within analytical method due to inadequate control of the analytical method.  This is best observed in the lead data by atomic absorption in northern Nevada.  A block of samples was analyzed as a single batch.  The blocks were defined as 15 minutes of latitude by 1 degree of longitude.  This analytical problem seems to be most prominent in the atomic absorption data.  Once this difference is recognized, this blocking of the data can often be observed as a subtle pattern in many of the elements.  Again, the small number of broad intervals subdues this pattern.  For molybdenum, most of the analyses had detection limits greater than the crustal abundance of 1.2 ppm.  The Oes (optical emission spectrographic) data had detection limits around 4 ppm.  This results in about half of the reported measurments appearing to be about twice too large.  Consequently, only the higher values are considered valid.</attraccr>

Obtained NURE data by 2 degree quadrangle from  the Branch of Geochemistry archive.  This was done before the data were available on CD-ROM.  Samples coded as stream sediments and soil samples were selected.  The quadrangles were grouped into three analytical groups. OES, NAA and Mixed.  These groups were generally from one laboratory; however the criteria was analytical method and element suite analyzed.
Editing of Bob Turner's open files involved removal of duplicates by inspection and conversion of the units to parts per million.  The samples are those coded by the NURE program as stream sediments and soils.   A USGS STATPAC gridding routine was used to define as duplicates all remaining sample sites that were within 100 meters of each other.  For these duplicates the highest valued for each element was used as the value for that element at that site.  This dropped only a few sample sites.  The sample site data were then reformatted to an ARC/INFO point coverage and the ARC command "theissen" was used to create a polygon coverage of the points.  A theissen polygon is defined by selecting the half-way point between all surrounding points as the limits of a polygon.  For the Great Basin, these theissen polygons were clipped by the boundaries of the quadrangles.  For a few isolated points, circular polygons with a radius of 5 km were put around these points.  This results in large unrealistic polygons in areas of sparse sampling such as the Great Salt Lake Desert.  For Arizona, the theissen polygons were clipped to exclude large unsampled areas, primarily several Indian Reservations.  For display, the elemental analyses were normalized by crustal abundance, that is division of the ppm value by that element's Clarke value.  The Clarke values for Cu, Mo, and Zn are respectively: 68 ppm, 1.2 ppm, 13 ppm, and 76 ppm.  The display of normalized Clarke values was to define 5 intervals with breaks at less than or equal to .67, 1.5, 2.5, 4. and greater than 4.  These intervals were displayed as light blue, green, yellow, orange, and red.  The base metal enrichment was calculated as the sum of the normalized Clarke values for Cu, Mo, Pb, and Zn.  The display uses 10 intervals defined with the ARC class quantile command.  Class quantile defines each interval to have the same number of sample sites.  This display makes many small intervals where there are lots of samples in the frequency histogram and large intervals on the tails of the frequency histogram.
