Municipalities within territories under their authority

manage environmental protection functions according to the legislation of the Republic of Latvia, i.e., control activities with hazardous waste,
issue permits for physical and legal persons on activities with hazardous waste and also annul them according to the legislation,
elaborate and ratify scheme for the collection and transportation of hazardous waste according to the republican scheme,
ratify location of hazardous waste collection and utilisation companies and landfills,
co-ordinate the elaborated safety and pro-accident plan measures regarding activities with hazardous waste, as well as accident management plans.

Municipalities and companies can get financial assistance for the management of hazardous waste directly from the natural resources tax revenues or by means of asking for subsidies from the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund, which partly manages revenues from the natural resource tax.

The Natural Resource Tax was introduced aiming at the restriction of inefficient use of natural resources and environmental pollution, reduction of production and sale of products that pollute the environment, promotion of introduction of new and improved technologies that reduce environmental pollution, assist sustainable economy development strategy, and provision of financial assistance for environmental protection projects.
