Summary BMR Procedures for Windows NT and Windows 2000 with ITSM

Abstract
This tip provides summary procedures for performing BMR on Windows NT and 2000. It also corrects some commands which have been published in older redbooks. For more information refer to the following IBM Redbooks:

Summary Bare Metal Restore Procedures for Windows NT and 2000
This tip summarizes procedures for performing a bare metal restore of a Windows NT or 2000 computer. Note that IDENTICAL HARDWARE must be used on the recovery system, and therefore, these procedures are appropriate for a hard drive failure, operating system corruption, or disaster recovery onto a system where this condition is met.

Backup Preparation
  • For NT4, the TSM dsm.opt BACKUPREG YES is the default for incrementals.
  • For W2K, the TSM dsm.opt DOMAIN ALL-LOCAL is the default, and this will include SYSTEMOBJECT backup for incrementals.
  • Remove all excludes from dsm.opt.
    • Or use the following the exclude statements:
      Exclude *:\...\pagefile.sys
      Exclude *:\...\system32\config\*.*
      Exclude *:\...\system32\config\...\*
      Exclude *:\...\recycler\*.*
  • Record Windows Service Pack level, hard drive partitioning, and filesystem formatting information for use at recovery time.

Backup Commands
  • dsmc incr

TSM W2K restore steps
  • Repartition, format hard drive
  • Install W2K, set computername to original
  • Install appropriate W2K SP
  • Install tsm ba client
  • dsmc restore c:\ -replace=all -subdir=yes
  • dsmc restore systemobject
  • Reboot

TSM NT4 restore steps
  • Repartition, format harddrive
  • Install nt4 to c:\wintemp, set computername to something other than original
  • Install appropriate NT4 SP
  • Install tsm ba client
  • dsmc restore c:\ -replace=all -subdir=yes
  • Restore registry
    • Copy c:\adsm.sys\registry\<nodename>\machine\*.* c:\winnt\system32\config\
    • Copy c:\adsm.sys\registry\<nodename>\users\default c:\winnt\system32\config\
  • Reboot
  • Remove c:\wintemp

For more details on these procedures, refer to the following IBM Redbooks:
Windows NT Backup and Recovery with ADSM - http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg242231.html

Important
For the NT4 restores documented in the Redbooks SG24-2231 and SG24-4880, there is an error in the examples for restoring the windows registry files directly from TSM. The corrected commands are:
  • dsmc restore c:\adsm.sys\registry\<nodename>\machine\ c:\winnt\system32\config\ -preservepath=none
  • dsmc restore c:\adsm.sys\registry\<nodename>\users\default c:\winnt\system32\config\
Or, use the copy commands listed in the TSM NT4 restore steps section above, instead.
